SUN CHILD

The moment you experience a photograph will never be the same as the moment it was taken. But a small sliver of the past will always come through. With Sun Child, I wanted to bring together a group of photos that evoked the particular atmosphere of the place where I grew up, that showed the way I feel when I remember California.

California is palm trees, sure. But California is more than that. California is the rims on a Cadillac in the glint of the morning. California is oldies thumping out of a trunk in the taqueria parking lot. California is skateboarding and surfing crossing paths at the beach, the ring of a basketball on an asphalt court, the rattle of spray cans and the flickering neon. California is the hustle, the grind, the people and the sunshine. California is everything.

This place is inextricably tied to my photographic style. There’s a lightness, a dreamlike quality to the colors, the way an intimate point in time can open in aperture to represent the whole. From San Francisco to LA, California is a subject in and of itself, and these individual elements that I’ve captured here in this book show just a few facets of the memory I’ve built there over the years.
